It’s a common assumption.
If you sweat, you smell. So if you stop sweating, the smell should stop too.
But the body doesn’t quite work that way.
Sweating is normal and healthy
Sweat is your body’s natural way of regulating temperature.
When you get warm, sweat glands release moisture onto the skin. As it evaporates, it helps cool you down.
This process is essential for normal body function.
And importantly, sweat itself does not smell.
The two types of sweat
The body produces two main types of sweat.
Eccrine sweat is mostly water and salt. It appears across the body and is largely odourless.
Apocrine sweat, released in areas like the armpits, contains proteins and lipids.
Neither type smells on its own.
So where does body odour come from?
Body odour develops when specific bacteria on the skin break down components of apocrine sweat into smaller compounds that smell.
That means odour is not caused by sweat itself, but by odour-causing bacterial activity interacting with sweat.
What antiperspirants do
Antiperspirants use aluminium salts to temporarily reduce sweating.
Less moisture can reduce the conditions in which odour develops.
But blocking sweat does not directly address the bacterial activity that causes smell.
And since sweating is a normal body function, stopping it entirely is not required to stay fresh.
The role of the skin microbiome
Your skin hosts a microbiome, a diverse community of microorganisms that support skin balance.
Most bacteria on the skin are harmless or beneficial.
Odour occurs when specific bacterial activity is present, not simply because bacteria exist.
Disrupting the microbiome too aggressively can cause irritation without reliably preventing odour.
A more effective approach
If odour is caused by bacterial activity, then managing that activity is a more direct solution than stopping sweat.
Deodorants that neutralise odour-causing activity while allowing natural sweating tend to remain effective without interfering with normal body function.

The takeaway
You don’t need to stop sweating to stop smelling.
Sweat is normal. Odour is caused by specific bacterial activity.
Understanding the difference makes choosing the right deodorant much easier.
